Location

On the palm side of the forearm, about three finger-widths above the wrist crease, between two tendons

Function

Used in patient guidance for nausea; not a treatment for chest pain

Where is PC6?

With the palm facing up, the point is on the inner forearm between two tendons, roughly three finger-widths above the wrist crease. This practical landmark is described in MSK’s patient guide to acupressure for nausea and vomiting. Finger-widths are an approximation, not a fixed distance in centimetres; do not press deeply while searching for a tendon.

What does the patient guidance recommend?

MSK describes comfortable pressure using the thumb, with a small circular movement for two to three minutes. Its advice is supportive care for nausea, not a promise to stop every cause of vomiting. Pressure should not hurt. Avoid skin that is broken, red, swollen or otherwise irritated, and stop if the technique causes pain or tingling.

If nausea is persistent, severe or new during treatment, ask the care team what to do. An optional comfort technique does not explain the cause or replace prescribed anti-nausea treatment.

Does this apply to acupuncture research?

No direct equivalence can be assumed. NCCIH’s acupuncture evidence summary concerns a broader range of professional interventions, including needles. It does not establish that pressing one point at home produces the same result. This page gives no instructions for needles, electrical stimulation or moxibustion.

What about chest tightness or palpitations?

Do not use the traditional association of PC6 with the chest to judge whether a symptom is safe. NHS chest-pain guidance says sudden persistent chest pain, especially with spreading pain, sweating or breathlessness, needs emergency help. Seek urgent assessment rather than testing whether pressure changes the sensation. A response to massage cannot rule out a heart problem.
